Strategic transition to R290 strengthens our focus on future-ready heat pumps
This transition is a key part of our ongoing efforts to develop future-ready and environmentally responsible heat pump solutions.
Since 1974, we have developed high-efficiency heat pumps that provide both heating and cooling as part of a healthy indoor climate. Today, evolving EU F-gas regulation is accelerating the shift towards refrigerants with significantly lower climate impact, and we are actively preparing both our residential and commercial product portfolio for this transition.
R290 has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below 3 and contains no PFAS-related substances. This makes it a central part of our forward-looking approach. At the same time, the regulatory shift is already underway within the EU framework.
For a company of our size, this transition represents a significant investment. It reflects a clear strategic decision to invest early in technologies, manufacturing, and capabilities that will support future requirements and evolving market expectations.
From 1 January 2027, new EU restrictions will apply to certain categories of heat pumps and air conditioning systems using fluorinated refrigerants above specified GWP thresholds. Additional restrictions will follow in the years after, depending on system type and capacity. Against this backdrop, we are preparing our product portfolio for the transition to R290 in line with upcoming requirements.
“This is an important step for Nilan and a significant investment in our future. For a company of our size, this transition represents a substantial commitment. But it also reflects our ambition – to act early, take responsibility, and continue developing high-quality solutions that prepare both us and our customers for what lies ahead,” says Peter Sønderskov, CEO of Nilan.
With expanded manufacturing in Denmark, we combine technological development with a strong focus on quality, sustainability, and responsible production. As a family-owned company, we remain committed to delivering reliable indoor climate solutions developed and produced under well-organised and transparent conditions.
We have a long tradition of innovation within compact ventilation and heat pump solutions. With the transition to R290, we build on this legacy and strengthen our position in the next generation of heat pumps and solutions with integrated ventilation heat recovery.
